Self-Discovery Through the Arts

Arts are the template in which we discover our unknown, unconscious facets and give them movement, voice, and form.

We are inherently creative, capable of making art and expressing ourselves through various practices. Our ancestors crafted beautiful objects and shared stories through their artistic expressions. Let’s continue to keep the arts alive and engage the creative side of our brains.

Smudge fans, Native American Rituals, Ceremony

Feather Smudge Fan

A feathered smudge fan is one of the most essential objects in a ceremony. The feathers help disperse the smoke from any form of sage, copal, sweetgrass, or incense (or air for smoke-sensitive) and cleanse the energy field around you.

  • The act of making a power object will help you express your creative energy, enjoy conversation, and experience the spiritual energies of the space around us.

You will also learn the symbolic messages that each bird brings, the importance of cleansing the air around you, and how to do a simple smudge ceremony.

  • We will begin with a short cleansing ceremony, and then we will gather around a table or an open floor. You will have the opportunity to choose the feathers you want and easily create your feathered smudge fan, using tanned buckskin and glue to wrap around your unique bundle of feathers.

Theater Improv

Theater improvisation can help release physical tension and inhibitions, allowing us to relax and have fun. Otherwise, known as laughter medicine.

  • You may uncover hidden aspects of your personality, express a character from another lifetime, explore an ancestor from your lineage, or even embody an eccentric archetype that encourages you to come out of your shell. Everyone is guaranteed to have at least one belly laugh during the session.

  • We will meet at your residence for a brief sharing circle. Every session will begin with energizing theater exercises. You will have the opportunity to discover a variety of characters through choosing hats, scarves, gloves, and/or small props and exploring different walks, accents, and mannerisms. Acting out these characters and experiencing humor through improv exercises boosts confidence, frees your voice, and provides a new avenue to express repressed parts of your psyche.
